October 9th and it's 23 degrees.... wow! Lets go for a nice Sunday drive. I know, most people are home preparing a Thanksgiving Turkey but I felt that it was just to nice to stay home, and I surely enjoy getting out for a nice Sunday drive in my old British Car. I sent out an email the night before and what do you know, when I had shown up, there were 3 others waiting to enjoy this hot day. Today, there is no elaborate destination, just a nice Sunday drive.
Today, Lee had shown up in his recently acquired 1978 MGB. The car needs a little detailing but it looks good and sounds great and now is ready for it's inaugural run with the BCCCB. Lee had a supper obligation and this quick Sunday drive is a great way to test out the car. Also with us today we have, fresh from a trip to the Old Country, Joe Renzi with Lady Bug. Taking up the rear of the pack today we have the tail gunner, Donnie Peters. I think after this story, we'll refer to Donnie as the Sheppard as he does an amazing job of watching over the flock on all our runs.
There is a story hitting the news of an old bulk carrier, The MV Miner, a 230-metre long vessel that used to carry cargo on the Great Lakes has run aground on Scaterie Island, so off we went to see what we could see. Our nice sunny and warm Sunday Drive took us along the Louisbourg Highway, past Albert Bridge and into the historic town of Louisbourg.
You can't go to Louisbourg and not go see the Fortress. If not for a tour then at least have it in the background of a picture or two. I put in this story a link to the Louisbourg battle of 1758 for you history buffs. Now, From the vantage point of where we parked, you can see the the Fortress to your right and to your left, the infamous lighthouse of Louisbourg, where on a stormy day, the waves will crash upon the rugged coastline creating and amazing display of the oceans fury. Today the sea was more of a brilliant blue millpond, with only a hint of a wave to be seen, so no need to stop by the lighthouse today.
Our next stop was in Main-A-Dieu, the closest proximity to Scaterie Island and perhaps a view of the MV Miner on it's shore. We took a few dirt roads to get a better vantage point but we couldn't see the ship. Don asked a guy nearby if one could see the ship and his reply was that it was visible from the Mira Gut, so off we drove. Crossing the Mira River, we pulled over to try and catch a glimpse of the ship. My camera couldn't see it but with Don's Binoculars you could just make out the outline of the massive superstructure against the shore. If I had a better camera perhaps I could have gotten a picture or two but not today. I was surprised however that the local fishermen didn't offer tours for $20 to get out to see the ship.... I would have paid.
Still only early in the day but due to Lee's supper commitment he turned off to go home, as for the rest of us, a stop off at the Bay Side Drive-in was in order. What a nice place. We ordered our lunch and the day being as nice as it is, we opted for lunch on the picnic table off to the side of the restaurant. Here we were entertain by Joe with his tales of his and Jean's visit to the old county. I may have to visit Italy one day after the stories he told. Time to make our way home to our turkey suppers, or at least try to make or way home. After our lunch Don darted off in his quickest direction home and Joe, Paula and I another direction. A few miles up the road the low gentle hum of the engine in Paula's B began to sputter and lose power. The new Sending unit in the new gas tank was registering 1/4 tank, just touching the red but sputter sputter regardless. Knowing immediately that it was fuel starvation I quickly checked the engine bay for a fuel leak, then the under body and finally the pump, All checks out. Joe ran me back to the last gas station and the clerk actually gave me a gas can and told me to bring it back... how rare is that. $8 worth of fuel and back we headed. Gas in and she fired up. Time to head back with the gas can and then home for Turkey Supper at the sister in-laws.
There you have it, a "Nice Sunday Drive". It didn't take 7 hours and there was no elaborate destination, just a "Nice Sunday Drive".
You know how it goes. If you weren't there you missed it. Come along next time.
