That's right, "no destination". Just a sunny Sunday, and I for one didn't want to hang around the house gardening and painting, so I checked the oil on the ole MG and drove to our usual meeting place to see if anyone was heading out in their great British car. Sure enough! Bobby, Anita and Julian were there and shortly after I arrived, Don showed up. The air was cool and the weather office said cooler along the coast, so inland we went. Yes, inland we went and man was it hot. We chose a route through Eskasoni and then through Iona.
For years we drove by the old (yet still being used) train tressel on the side of the road in Iona, today we took the time for a look. The old tressel looked good as a back drop and after a while, Julian thought that a picture from on top of the tressel would be nice ... so off for a little climb he went.
The pictures Julian took were awesome. The first showing the gentle turn of the tressel, I sure would hate to take a walk across only to be met by a train.... it's a long way down. Oh, and the rust, well, you would be a little rusty to if you were built in 1915.
From there to here, the ferry across Little Narrows. I tried to recapture a photo I took years ago but it wasn't to be, the picture in the rain was much better. The picture wasn't the only reason to come this way, this is a very quiet ferry crossing and the area is so tranquil and beautiful that it's a sin not to stop here for a moment just to sink in the sights.

Next stop, the look-off at Marble Mountain. The view from here is astounding, and the fact that tourist season hasn't started yet, there wasn't a soul around. On a hot summers day you will see plenty of swimmers along the beautiful beach 300 feet below, playing in the emerald waters of the Bras D'or Lakes. Across the street the mountain raises up another 500 feet or so and I thought a picture from the top would be nice, so up I went, blazing a trail through the brush and up a steep grade of loose rocks...ummmm maybe 200 feet up is enough. After I caught my breath I snapped off a few photos. the one below is the best of the lot, with Don, Anita and Bobby looking over the lake with the cars behind them.
Boy was it hot out, time to seek some shelter from the blazing sun. The China King Restaurant in Port Hawkesbury fit the bill, we were hot, starving and thirsty. Buffet anyone? Man what a meal and an Ice cold beer did the trick, next on to Warren and Sandra's. Their beautiful house situated on a hill in Port Hasting was vacant, I guess the Johnston's were out enjoying this beautiful day as well. We only stayed a minute, we left behind a club card so they would know we stopped by to say hi.
Leaving Warren's, we stopped next at a takeout on the other side of the St. Peters Canal for an ice cream and then to the Battery Park for a breath of cool sea air. Here we hoped to get out to the lighthouse but the road was gated and we didn't have the energy to walk.
We hung around here for a few moments, long enough for Julian and I to take a few pictures. One last stop along the # 4 highway and we beat it for home. Man what a day. We are all sunburnt and burnt out. When I arrived home I plugged the camera card into my computer to see the pictures of today's "journey to nowhere" and before they downloaded I fell asleep. Paula woke me up laughing saying my glasses were crossways on my face and my face was half buried into a pillow on the couch. That tells me that this was a great day, the sun the driving the meal and the laughs tuckered me out and I am sure the rest felt the same why.
There wasn't many who had shown up for this run but it didn't matter, we had a great day all the same. I can't speak for everyone but at my house you have to do battle with the flies if you wish to get some sun. On this drive, I also did battle with the flies, I killed hundreds with my windshield and didn't get bit once. I think I'll use this method of fly killing as often as I can this summer. We're just doing our part in ridding neighbourhoods of these pesky little critters while having fun... Come alone next time.
