The simplicity of a BCCCB outing sometimes is nothing more then, gather to get ready to go, a very nice drive through some scenic Cape Breton roads in an old British Car, (being the envy of many who see us), spend a few hours at a car show meeting people and taking in the sights of some amazing looking cars. Afterwards, fined a nice restaurant and after that enjoy a leisurely drive home. Sounds like a great day to me.
The gathering is simple, 10am at the Value Village. Here we always spend time chatting it up, talking of things that happened sense last we met. Here, Brent and Joy arrived in their regular car to see if anyone was gathering. They quickly left to retrieve their mint 1975 MGB saying "we love travelling with you guys". Ready to roll.... not yet, it's hard to get Don to stop talking long enough to fire up the engines. What a shine Don has on the old LE. Black looks so nice clean and he and Preston keep their black LEs gleaming.
I checked my emails on my best friend, my iphone, before leaving Sydney and there was an email from Bill MacDonald saying he'll meet us at the Bras D'or View Restaurant. This is great, Bill's car should get a lot of attention at the show, as a matter of fact, each car here today are nearly perfect examples of MGBs and they all should attract a lot of attention. Heck, today we got a lot of attention just driving down the road. Not sure why but today there were waves, horns blowing and in one occasion a guy passed us on Kelly's Mountain give us a thumbs up. "I am not sure why".... well after typing this, I remembered about 9 or 10 years ago, before the formation of the BCCCB, I jumped on my Suzuki Cavalcade and did a tour of P.E.I. and New Brunswick. On my drive home from Fredericton I remember passing a string of old British Cars on the highway. I am guessing the Fredericton Club or the Moncton Club heading to P.E.I. for the Over The Bridge Tour. It was very nice to to pass and see for sure, so I do understand how nice these cars looks as they go by.
We stumbled on this show about 3 years ago and without a doubt a perfect venue. MacKinnon's Campground is situated on a small peninsula on the huge Lake Ainslie and you can see straight down the lake from this vantage point, I have to be say, this is an amazing view. I think we were given the best parking spot at the show, along the shore line under a huge Maple Tree. This tree helped block out the hot midday sun, just perfect. To add the the perfect paring spot, this place had a a BBQ going on, there was a pool and full canteen. What more could one ask for?
I mentioned in an earlier story where it's nice to take in a show from another community, this gives you the opportunity to see cars from their area. There were still a lot of cars from industrial Cape Breton but there were a few cars around that I haven't see before. Corvette... I love Corvettes. One day I hope to have one in my stable. If I stop buying British Car parts maybe I could afford one. The white Challenger was nice to see, as I walked away I was kicking myself in the ass for selling mine back in the 80s. Yup, pretty stund move.
Ahh, the girls certainly enjoyed the big tree we parked under on this hot day. Just look at the lake behind Barc's car.... calm as can be, because there wasn't a breath of air. Not that Barc needed it but the guys are making sure Barc didn't get stuck as he manoeuvres his car out of the sand, he backed up just a little to far.
There you go, British Cars and Ice-Cream go together. I was picking at something in the car and when I turned around there was Bill walking down the road with a huge Ice-Cream, I am sure he will appreciate this picture ..lol. Time to call it a day, we stayed almost two hours and the crowd was thinning out. I think this is a great show, the guy who was running it was either the owner or the owners son, either way he did a great job and was very personable. When people treat you good it is very appreciated and I think we'll make this an annual trek as well.
Next stop Vi's Restaurant in Whycocomagh. This is a very popular stop for many a traveller. The service is excellent as usual. Brent and Joy had to get home so when we turned off into Baddeck, Brent and Joy continued on. A sunny Sunday in Beddeck, this place was packed and the cars made a big impression. I love watching people point as we drive by.
A quick drive up Kelly's and over the Seal Island Bridge to home to end a very simple yet very enjoyable day.
Simple and enjoyable, the best way to describe this and almost every BCCCB run. I understand that some people don't enjoy car shows, they would rather be driving then sitting in one spot. The thing to remember is that car shows are more of a gathering of those with the same interest. Some shows give you grab bags of goodies or a dash plaque. The last show we attended we had the opportunity to win a Husqvarna lawn tractor and a compressor. Heck, sign me up for that show already. The important part is meeting the people. This show, two years ago, we met Bernie MacDougal, he owns a Austin Healey that we didn't even know was on the island, this car is for sale by the way if anyone is interested. Today he tells us that the car is in getting the motor redone. The price was right for a Healey that requires a little work and if it wasn't for this show we would never have met the guy. So go out there and attend a show, look beyond the cars and see the people.
Once again, if you weren't there you missed it. Come along next time
